Where do your keys live right now?

In Saved Messages. A vless:// string between a meme and a hosting invoice. An SSH key somewhere above it. The k8s-certificate-renewal how-to you once googled for three hours — attached to something.

Three ways this breaks:

  1. Search fails. Telegram search is shallow; bookmarks can't be searched by content. "It's in there somewhere" is worse than not having it.
  2. Offline fails completely. A VPN config is needed exactly when there is no connectivity.
  3. Secrets sit in plaintext. Saved Messages is a regular cloud chat, not end-to-end encrypted. Your keys are readable by Telegram's servers.

~5% of saved items are ever opened again — normal for a reference library. What's not normal is failing to find them at the moment it matters.

How it works

  1. Throw anything at the bot — a link, text, an image, a file. From the browser, from a chat, from your phone. Zero forms.
  2. The server does the sorting — parses pages into markdown, detects the type (secret, how-to, snippet, article), assigns tags. No folders: you file nothing, because nobody ever does.
  3. Find it on your phone — the app opens on a search field. The full text corpus lives on the device: search works on a plane.

Secrets the server cannot read

Encryption happens on the client. The key is derived from your passphrase and never leaves the device. The server cannot decrypt your secrets — a structural property, not a privacy-policy clause.

Honestly: the crypto itself is phase 3 of the roadmap. But the data model is built for it from the very first migration — so sync never has to be rewritten around it.

Your data is plain .md files

Pocket shut down on 2025-07-08 and deleted user data. Omnivore shut down on 2024-11-15 and gave users 14 days to export. This audience remembers.

Here the entire base is plain markdown. One-click export of the whole archive. Free. No subscription required. Always.

The questions already in your head

Does it work yet?

No. Phase 1 is in development. The early list is a queue and a $2.33/mo price locked forever — not a purchase. I don't take money for something that doesn't exist.

Why is this better than Obsidian or Notion?

It isn't — if you diligently file notes into folders. BrainKeeper is for people who don't: throw it at the bot, forget it, search finds it. Plus offline search on your phone and one-tap copy.

Why is this better than Bitwarden?

Bitwarden stores passwords brilliantly — and is useless for how-tos, articles and snippets. This is one place for everything, with client-side secret encryption (phase 3).

Will there be self-hosting?

No. Instead — the whole base in markdown and free one-click export: the real fear isn't "I want my own server", it's "I don't want to lose my data when you shut down". Export closes it.

What if the project shuts down?

You take the .md archive in one click and open it with anything. The data is readable without this product — unlike Pocket and Omnivore.

Is sending secrets through Telegram safe?

No, and I won't lie that it is. A message to the bot transits Telegram's servers in plaintext. That's why in phase 3 secrets are created only via the app or CLI — encrypted before transmission. And the bot will detect a secret in the stream, encrypt it, delete the source message from the chat, and warn you honestly that the value should be considered compromised.

Why not free?

Omnivore became popular because it was free — and died for the same reason. $3.50/mo is roughly a third of Readwise's price. And the data is yours either way.

Who's building this

I'm a solo developer. I'm building BrainKeeper first of all for myself: my own vless:// strings and SSH keys lived in Saved Messages, and twice I failed to find the right one at the moment it mattered.

That means two things. This product won't die of a "strategy pivot" — I am its user number one. And it won't become a kitchen sink — I personally hate kitchen sinks.
